2012 Solar Eclipse
Port Douglas Solar Eclipse – November 14th, 2012
Port Douglas is the closest population centre to the central line of the track of the 2012 total solar eclipse.
06:38am 14th November 2012
The 2012 Port Douglas Solar Eclipse begins in an uninhabited region of Australia’s Northern Territory about 250 kilometres east of Darwin. Traveling southeast, the umbral shadow will quickly cross the Gulf of Carpentaria to reach Cape York Peninsula and Far North Queensland.
The first and only populated region in the path lies along the east coast of Far North Queensland and Port Douglas is just 10 kilometres north of the central line. Here you will enjoy an early morning total eclipse lasting 2 minutes with the Sun at 14° above the eastern horizon directly off Four Mile Beach. The total time of the partial eclipse either side of the total eclipse is almost two hours.
The day will start on Four Mile Beach with first light at 05:11 followed by sunrise at 05:34. The partial eclipse (when the moon partially covers the sun) will start at 5:44:27am and end at 7:39:42am, while the phase of totality (when the moon fully covers the sun) will last about two minutes, starting at 6:38:04am and ending at 6:40:09am.
After leaving Australia, the umbral shadow glides over the ocean, undisturbed by further landfall for the remainder of its track.
